Sagan wins Tour of Poland, Dan Martin wins a stage

Peter Sagan of the Liquigas-Cannondale won a dramatic Tour of Poland, beating Garmin-Cervélo’s Irish climber Dan Martin by just a few seconds. Martin held the lead going into the final stage, but Sagan took second on the stage, securing a 6-second time bonus and the final general classification.

On stage 6, the toughest mountain stage, Garmin-Cervélo’s Irish climber Dan Martin tasted success in the Tour of Poland for the second year running. In the last few kilometers of this epic stage, a torrent of rain and dark evening skies made a dramatic backdrop for the finale. With 12 km to go, on the toughest 23% slopes of the Tauron climb, Martin made his attack to create the final selection. He rode a hard tempo to keep pressure on Sagan, then surged on the final, uphill 600 meters to win the stage and take the overall lead by just a few seconds. After the finish, Martin fell down on the wet pavement from cold exhaustion.

Martin’s work was undone on the final stage by Sagan, the smart Slovak sprinter. Sagan and his team rode a perfect race to secure a mid-stage time bonus and second place in the final. These extra seconds made the difference and Sagan celebrated overall victory. "It's definitely the best success in my career. It will stick in my memory forever, because today I could have won or lost by three seconds,” Sagan said.
