Breakthrough victory for van den Broeck

Belgian rider Jurgen van den Broeck of the Omega Pharma-Lotto team scored the first professional win of his career in dramatic fashion, attacking on the uphill finish of the first stage in the Criterium du Dauphine. With this achievement, 28-year old van den Broeck shows he's on good form for the upcoming Tour de France where last year he rode steadily to finish fifth overall. Remarkably, this is van den Broeck's first professional victory in a career spanning 7 years.

"I've been waiting for this win for the past seven or eight years," said van den Broeck. "All too often I've finished runner up, so winning the first stage of the Dauphine, before heading to the Tour de France, is perfect."

The 144km opening stage of the Dauphine started in Albertville and traversed three rated climbs in the foothills of the Alps before finishing on a Cat. 2 climb to Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse. It was on this 7km final climb that van den Broeck attacked the group to ride away and win by just 6 seconds.

"During the race, the legs were OK," Van den Broeck said, "and I thought 'why not attack in the finale if I'm good.' Then I saw (Sivtsov) going. My teammate (Jurgen) Roelandts said 'come on, go.' When he said that, I went."

Van den Broeck rode Mavic's most popular racing wheelset, the 1190-gram Cosmic Carbone Ultimate, on his Canyon Aeroad racing bike. CCU wheels are light and aerodynamic, perfect for the varied demands of hilly road courses.
